Jalpaiguri: Three youths from Tikiapara here were arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the murder of a woman and burglary of her home in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The trio were picked up from different parts of the Jalpaiguri town by a joint team of local and Tamil Nadu police. Some of the stolen items were recovered from Pintu Mallick, Samrat Roy and Sanjoy Roy who were also accused of injuring the woman's husband.
Sources said the youths had been working as construction workers in Tamil Nadu for the past five years and used to stay near Coimbatore. "They would fix granite stones and tiles on construction sites under a local contractor," a police officer said.
From January 22, they were engaged at a house that is under Annur police station jurisdiction of Coimbatore district, where P. Mayilsamy and his wife Rajamoni used to reside.
"From the first day, the trio started interacting with the couple and could develop a rapport with them. On January 27, they reached the couple's house at night, with an intention to steal cash and valuables," said a police source.
They first used a livewire and the husband turned unconscious after being hit by electric shock. They attacked Rajamoni, his 50-year-old wife, and strangulated her to death.
"The trio then managed to get hold of some cash and gold. They fled the spot, took a train, and headed for Jalpaiguri," an officer of the Tamil Nadu police team said.
The Tamil Nadu police came to know that the youths are residents of Jalpaiguri town and had arrived here on January 30 after the crime.
A 10-member police team, led by S. Venkateswar, an inspector of Annur police station, headed for Jalpaiguri. On Tuesday night, they arrived here and informed their counterparts at the Kotwali police station in detail about the crime.
"The Tamil Nadu police informed us in writing about the incident and sought our help. We immediately swung into action. A team of policemen in plainclothes was sent to the locality to keep an eye on all the three accused. Finally, on Wednesday night, they were arrested from different locations," said Amitabha Maiti, the superintendent of police, Jalpaiguri.
Police sources said the trio has owned up to the crime during preliminary interrogation. "Also, some gold ornaments and cash have been recovered from them," said a police officer.
All the three were produced in the chief judicial magistrate's court here on Thursday. They were given to the Tamil Nadu police in a transit remand for seven days.
