#Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia Requests Minister Jual Oram to Seek Opinion for All State Govts on ST Status for Gorkhas

Darjeeling MP Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia yesterday sent a reminder and request to the Hon'ble Minister, Tribal Affairs Jual Oram informing him of the support for Scheduled Tribe status for the Gorkha community in Himachal Pradesh and urged him to require the committee formed to examine the demand of including Gorkhas as ST to consult with all the state governments across India.

While the committee, thus formed is mandated to do so, we have come to note that they are yet to seek opinion from state governments from other parts of India barring West Bengal and Sikkim.

Reminding him of the fact, Darjeeling MP Ahluwalia writes, "I am of the opinion that the Committee constituted of the purpose in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs may be directed to correspond with to all respective State Governments, where a significant Gorkha population resides"

The Darjeeling MP has requested that such consultations be "completed by the 31st of October, 2016 so that the same may be considered/finalized before start of forthcoming Winter Session of the Parliament."
................................................

We request all the Gorkha organizations and community members to pressurize their respect state governments to issue such letter of recommendations.

Please take this advice seriously, later it may so happen that Gorkhas may be granted ST status in some states, while Gorkhas in other states may not be included as such.

If any Gorkha community in any state needs help to pursue the matter, please feel free to communicate with us at: thedarjeelingchronicle@gmail.com

In UNITY lies our strength, let us use our solidarity for a better future for our children.
