The first ropeway service in South Sikkim was inaugurated on Monday by Assembly Speaker KN Rai.
The ride will start from the rock garden, 3km from Namchi, and end at Samdruptse, where a 135ft tall statue of Guru Padmasambhava is located.
The distance between the two tourist hotspots is around 800m and it would take about 15 minutes to cover it.
"This is a new milestone for Sikkim tourism. It would help boost the economy and visitors can enjoy the beautiful landscape (from the cable cars)," said Rai.
The charge for a two-way ride is Rs 150 per person and for a one-way trip, one has to pay Rs 100.
"One can take the ropeway from the rock garden to Samdruptse. While coming down, there are two options - take the ropeway or a car," South district collector Raj Yadav said.
On Monday, some tourists took a free ride on the cable car. "It was a visual treat. We enjoyed it thoroughly," said a tourist from Noida, Renu Mehra.
The only other ropeway service in Sikkim is in Gangtok.
