Dos and Don’ts to prevent Dengue

Dengue is a viral fever and the virus is carried by Aedes mosquitoes. It is a largely preventable and manageable disease, doctors say, but precautions need to be taken to stay safe.
Here’s what you should (and should not) do to prevent Dengue:

Dos
  • Keep the areas around your house and the drains clean
  • Use mosquito repellents and nets; install screens on your doors and windows.
  • Wear light-coloured full-sleeve clothes to avoid mosquito bites.
  • Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day and carry water.
  • Any use-and-throw utensils should be cleared and put in bins.

Don’ts
  • Do not let water collect in open spaces and surroundings.
  • Do not self-medicate if you have symptoms of dengue like fever and body ache.
  • Do not panic. Most of the dengue patients can be cured with timely medical treatment.
  • Avoid giving steroids or antibiotics to dengue patients.
  • Avoid platelet transfusion unless there is an active bleeding or the platelet count is less than 10,000.
