A student of Ananda Chandra College of Commerce in Jalpaiguri town has filed a police complaint, accusing a Trinamul Chhatra Parishad union member and his associates of assaulting him and threatening to disallow him from attending classes if Rs 20,000 is not paid.
Abhishek Upadhay from Changrabandha in Cooch Behar (around 40km from here), filed the complaint at Kotwali police station yesterday against Subrata Chowdhury, the assistant general secretary of the union.
"Yesterday, Subrata Chowdhury, along with some of his associates, had demanded Rs 20,000 from me. They told me and one of my classmates that we were outsiders (not from Jalpaiguri town) and would have to pay the money or else, they would not allow us to attend classes. When we refused, they abused and beat us up. We are feeling intimidated and I have filed a complaint with police," said Abhishek.
Animesh Sarkar, Abhishek's classmate who had been allegedly intimidated, said such highhandedness by a section of union representatives had been going on in the college for quite some time.
"It is disappointing that the college authorities are not taking any step against these students," said Animesh, who hails from Belakoba in Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri district, around 25km from here.
While Abhishek and Animesh were being assaulted yesterday, other students informed the police who reached the college and brought the duo out of the campus.
"We think they would have beaten us more if the police had not intervened," Abhishek said.
Chowdhury denied the charges. "Some people are trying to implicate me in a false case. I want the police to bring the truth out," he said.
Sunil Kumar Jana, the teacher-in-charge, denied the knowledge of the assault and police intervention. "I will not make any comment. I would also like to make it clear that media persons should not come to the college as they wish. They can meet me only after an appointment," Jana said.
Ashish Roy, the inspector in charge of Kotwali police station, said: "We have received a complaint. Investigations have started."
