The All Bodo Students' Union and the People's Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement yesterday carried out a torchlight rally, demanding early solution to the long-pending demand of creation of separate Bodoland and political rights for Bodos living outside the proposed Bodoland area.
The rally was organised at all district and anchalik level.
The group said it would launch a series of protests in New Delhi in December during the winter session of Parliament and begin rail and highway blockade in January, followed by an indefinite mass hunger strike in March.
In Kokrajhar, the rally started from Pragati Bhawan to Absu's Kokrajhar anchalik office.
"We urge the Centre to come up with a pragmatic policy on the Bodoland issue as almost half a century has elapsed through agitation and it had claimed more than 5,000 lives," Absu president Pramod Boro said.
He said the BJP had promised to resolve the issue immediately if it came to power but had not taken any initiative even after being at the Centre for over two years.
Garjan Mushahary, deputy convener of the joint action committee, said: "The Bodos are at threat of extinction. Even after 70 years of Independence, the state has failed to protect their land, identity, language and culture." He said the Centre had signed two Bodo accords in the name of meeting the demands. But both the accords failed to fulfil the political aspiration and address the fundamental questions of the Bodos.
"The Absu and other allied groups who launched their third phase of movement have held five rounds of formal talks with the Centre, but to no avail," Mushahary said.
