#Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to sell souvenirs at stations

Writes: Mrinalini Sharma

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway will set up souvenir stalls at Darjeeling and Ghoom stations to promote the Unesco world heritage property among tourists.

Narendra Mohan, the area officer of the DHR, said Darjeeling and Ghoom had been chosen as toy trains ran between them.

"The initiative has been taken to popularise the heritage railway among tourists who visit the hills. We will be starting the stalls at Darjeeling and Ghoom stations in the third or fourth week of October. The stalls will be there not only for tourism season but all year round," said Mohan.

Merchandise made by local craftsmen will be stocked at the two stalls that will be run through NGOs and local agents. Items like coffee mugs, key chains, caps, frames, postcards bearing logos and pictures of the DHR and miniature models of the toy-train will be kept for sale.

Scarves, shawls, mittens and mufflers will also be available. However, all the items put up for sale at the stalls will bear the logo of the DHR for authenticity.

"We had kept a stall with DHR-related merchandise at a World Tourism Day programme in Siliguri. The sales were good. This has boosted our enthusiasm for setting up such outlets at the railway stations too. We will keep goods that have been prepared by the local craftsmen to promote their skill and merchandise among the tourists," said Mohan

70 YEARS AFTER INDEPENDENCE - DARA GAON FINALLY GETS ELECTRICITY

70 years after independence Dara Gaon and neighboring villages under Rimbick-Lodhoma samesty finally got connected to electricity yesterday.

Ramam Hydel Projects which is also in Rimbick-Lodhoma samesty, one of the oldest in Bengal, has been in operation for nearly 30 years now, yet the villages right next to it had to wait for this long to get electric connection. While the electricity generated from Ramam was used to light-up towns and cities in the plains, our own people were deprived of this.

All the villages across the GTA region will have electricity, road, drinking water, health care and access to quality education.

Following the legacy - Our preparations for Dashain Writes: Aditya M Thapa

Leaves are falling all around and I intuitively know its time I was on my way; just this time when the year starts to show its dull future. For me its an inception. All Gorkhas relate to it as being something forthcoming as everything else demotes automatically to a state of oblivion. The utmost priority being the foreseeable fact that the time is now to head home.

A celebration of health, humor, cuisine and stories since we last met has the ace- The Prime!

The countdown to my journey seems to be an eternity.

As the train/plane/bus jams its finale at Siliguri, the mountains welcome with its tenderness and trust for her children who've been away leading the legacy of our hills. Its a mother's love; only that which knows no division. The scent of celebrations amidst the sunny days, clear skies and cold nights. Its The High!

It means a lot! Its a forest fire not just a cigarette break.
And for those who couldn't make it this time of the year- If your hearts be broken for the "exile" which was too mistimed, I hope it brings good to you for the moral coils of the festivals may have missed you but you were never bereft of the love and memories we make during this time of the year.
