SHOCKING: A woman was allegedly raped in Delhi for a week by her friend, she met online, who also thrashed and tortured her by ‘pouring hot dal’

A woman hailing from West Bengal's Darjeeling was allegedly raped in Delhi for a week by her friend she had met online, said the police officials on Tuesday. The police said her friend assaulted her and in one incident he tortured her by "pouring hot dal".

A case against the accused, identified as Paras (28), was registered for rape, sodomy, and causing hurt. The police police official said they arrested the accused on February 2.

"The victim had been staying with Paras for around a month in a rented accommodation in Raju Park in south Delhi's Neb Sarai area," the officials said.

According to the police, on January 30, the Neb Sarai police station received a PCR call informing that a woman was being beaten by her husband. A police team rushed to the spot, rescued the woman and rushed her to AIIMS.

The woman had around 20 injury marks on her body when she was hospitalised. She was recently discharged, they added.

"When police enquired about the matter, the victim stated that she hailed from Darjeeling and came in contact with the accused over the phone," a senior police officer said.

She befriended Paras over phone, and was in touch with him for the last 3-4 months, the officer said.

The woman was supposed to reach Bengaluru in the first week of January as she had got a job of a house maid, the officer said.

As she had a train via Delhi, she decided to take a halt and meet Paras who then asked her to stay here and even assured to help her find a job.

On his assurance, she stayed with him in a rented accommodation in Raju Park, the officer added.

However, as the days passed, the accused allegedly started beating her up and even sexually assaulted her for a week, the officer said quoting the victim.

At one instance, Paras even allegedly "poured hot dal (lentils) over her" due to which she suffered burn injuries, the officer added.

Paras hails from Uttarakhand and worked as a cook at an eatery here, the police said.

Based on the woman's complaint, the police registered an FIR on January 30 under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (rape) and 377 (sodomy) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested the accused on February 2, the police officer further said. Further probe in the matter is underway, they added.

North Bengal: Tea estate comes up with mega solar power generation plant

For the first time in north Bengal, a tea estate has come up with an elaborate solar power generation plant that produces enough power in the garden for its operations and supplies power to bungalows and quarters across the area.

The Chengmari tea estate in Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district is spread over 1,800 hectares. With tea plantations of 1,450 hectares, it is known as the largest tea garden in Asia in terms of plantation. The garden has 5,000 workers.

“We have installed solar panels which can generate adequate power to run the factory, carry out irrigation and ancillary works and also provide power to workers' quarters, employees' residences, bungalows, offices and other similar places. This is the first time that a tea garden in this region has come up with such a large arrangement of solar power,” said garden manager Gajendra Sishodia.

In the garden, 490 solar panels have been installed on a one-hectare plot. The panels can provide 1,040 kilowatt of power. Around Rs 4.5 crore has been spent on the project.

“The panels here are bi-facial, with both sides capable of generating power. The money we spent on the project can be recovered in the next five or six years with a huge dip in our power bills. This money can be spent on garden and worker welfare,” Sishodia added.

In north Bengal, solar panels have been installed in several gardens for water heating and other purposes. But this is the first time that a garden has come up with such a major project to generate non-conventional electricity for multiple uses.

Sources in the garden said that the garden would be able to save around Rs 9 for every unit of power consumed.

“We are now using solar power to run 15 water pumps which are being used to sprinkle water in tea bushes. A primary estimate shows we will be able to save Rs 70 to Rs 80 lakh as power bill by using solar power. This means that our solar power after five or six years will be free. All we need to do is maintain the panels,” said a source.

As of now, 3,500 to 4,000 units of power are generated by the panels every day, which are sent to the factory and supplied to other places in the garden from there.

“The factory is shut now (because of the lean season). Once production starts, we are confident we can run production with solar power,” the source added.

The solar power initiative has drawn praise from tea workers. Ricky Karmakar, the secretary of the Chengmari unit of Trinamul Cha Bagan Sramik Union, hailed it as a major step by the garden management.

Protests against Bengal government’s decision to grant up to 5 decimals of land to tea garden residents

Writes : Vivek Chhetri

Darjeeling | Published 11.09.23

Protests against the Bengal government’s decision to grant up to 5 decimals of land to tea garden residents rocked Mirik in Darjeeling hills on Sunday.

The newly formed Chia Shramik Surakasha Samiti (CSSS), which is working on various issues related to the tea gardens, organised a rally in the hill town some 35km from Darjeeling. It was attended by Opposition leaders as well.

Pratap Khati, leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) and one of the prime movers of this samiti, urged people to organise another massive rally in Darjeeling soon.

“People must organise another massive rally in Darjeeling to protest against the decision to grant 5 decimal of land. Anit Thapa (chief of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) must pass a resolution in the GTA Sabha seeking a modification to the notification,” said Khati.

On August 1, the state government issued a notification to distribute land with a 5-decimal cap to tea garden workers and other residents in estates of north Bengal.

But the decision has evoked protests from various quarters. The management of tea gardens is against the distribution of land rights to the workers.

But Opposition parties and several workers are also opposing this scheme because of the 5-decimal cap, saying many tea garden workers or garden settlers have more than 5 decimals in their possession and they should get rights to the entire land. Many leaders are alleging that the state government might distribute land to private players after recovering land in excess of 5 decimals from settlers.

Some opposed the use of the word “landless” in the notification and argued that the hill residents had been in possession of land for generations but only lacked documents.

Ajoy Edwards, the president of Hamro Party, was also at the rally which converted into a public meeting. “Our party’s elected representatives from the Darjeeling municipality to GTA Sabha are with you,” he said.

GTA chief Anit Thapa, also the president of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), has already taken two steps back on this issue after witnessing the protests.

A few days back Thapa “requested” the district administration not to visit the tea gardens for any land survey but instead keep forms at the land reforms offices so that only those people who were willing to accept 5 decimals could fill up the forms.

On Saturday, during the third foundation day celebrations of his party in Kalimpong, Thapa said he would work to get documents for the entire land that the tea garden people possess and added that he would "take up this issue with the chief minister".

The massive crowd at Mirik on Sunday, however, suggests that Thapa was not able to pour oil over troubled waters.

The 5-decimal cap apart, some speakers at the Mirik protest also raised the Gorkhaland statehood issue. Some speakers also hit out at the tea union leaders, accusing them of working for the interest of the tea management and not the workers.
