Renowned environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee Tularam Upreti from Sikkim was laid to rest with full state honours today. .
Upreti was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2023 for his exceptional contributions to organic farming and ecological preservation. A pioneer in sustainable farming practices, his efforts earned him national recognition and widespread respect, especially in his home state of Sikkim.
His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from leaders, environmentalists, and admirers who mourn the loss of a visionary. His legacy remains a beacon of dedication to the environment, marking the end of an era but ensuring that his influence will endure. Upreti was laid to rest today with full state honours.
Condoling his death, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said, "I join the people of Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars in mourning the demise of Padma Shri Tularam Upreti ji from Sikkim.
He was a pioneer in growing rice and other vegetables organically without the use of fertilizers, advancing the legacy of organic farming in Sikkim.
His demise is a great loss, not only to Sikkim, but also to the people from our region and the nation.
