BRUTALITY AT DARJEELING DISTRICT HOSPITAL: 4 Drunk Ward Boys and a Policeman Brutalize Members of a Critically Ill Patient

On 15th of September, 2016 Mr. Vivek Dewan and Ashim Subba accompanied their mother Jayanti Subba who was in a critical condition to Darjeeling District Hospital, where she was admitted to the female ward. Since she was in a critical condition, she had to be admitted to the ICU, but there was no vacancy in ICU in Darjeeling Hospital so both Vivek and Ashim were waiting at the female ward contemplating with other members of their family on if she needs to be taken to Siliguri.
At around 10:30 PM, out of nowhere three hospital security guards and a police man who were probably drunk entered the female ward and beat up Vivek and Ashim mercilessly for no reason or rhyme. Both have sustained grievous injuries.
Since their mother was in a critical condition they were both helpless. Despite this they managed to file a GD with Sadar Police station.
Later they moved their mother to Siliguri, and the doctors there have admitted her to ICU.
At a time when Vivek and Ashim were going through mental trauma of having their mother on such a critical condition, it was pure brutality on the part of the four hospital guards and the policemen to have beaten then for no rhyme or reason.
Other patients were terrified of the brutality and even they complained that the ward boys are usually drunk.
This is not the 1st time that a Darjeeling Policeman has indulged in such a behavior, as recently we had reported another incident where a young man was beaten up on broad day light and his mother humiliated.
Sir we request you to kindly take cognizance of the matter and take strictest actions against the three hospital guards and the police man who indulged in such a brutality.
We hope GTA Health Department and SP Darjeeling Amit P Javalgi will take immediate action against the perpetrators.

With Over 33 Crores in Unpaid Dues - Siliguri Contractors Sit Out SMC Bids

A section of contractors enlisted with the Siliguri Municipal Corporation has stopped participating in the tender process since the past five months as the civic body has failed to clear dues of Rs 33 crore.
For the SMC, whose mayor Asok Bhattacharya has often blamed the state for holding back funds, it could mean potholed roads in the Puja season.
"We have decided not to participate in any tender process of the SMC unless it clears our dues," Biren Ghosh, the president of the SMC Contractors' Association, said here today.
According to Ghosh, the association has more than 450 members and most of them are supposed to get their dues paid by the civic body. The dues, he said, range from Rs 2 lakhs to Rs 1 crore.
"None of us has submitted any bid against the tenders floated by the SMC in the past five months.... Unless the old dues are cleared, our members do not have the financial capacity to spend money to carry out civic work in the city," Ghosh said.
"As the civic body has not cleared the dues till date, we have made it a point that there is no bid submitted for any tender floated by the SMC," he added.
Sources in the civic body said the contractors enlisted with the SMC carry out construction and repair of buildings, roads, culverts and drains.
"But if they do not participate in tenders, the situation would worsen in the town, particularly during the coming festive season. Several roads are damaged and need immediate repairs. Also, there are drains which need to be repaired," an official said. "The mayor and other office-bearers and elected representatives are aware of the situation and it is for them to take a decision."
The contractors also articulated their disappointment with the mayor.
"We were supposed to have a meeting with the mayor at SMCyesterday. We waited there till the evening, but could not meet him. All of us are disappointed because there is not even a specific assurance from the head of the civic body. No date of payment has been announced so far," the president of the contractors' association said.

Mother's Darjeeling toy train journey recreated

It was during her ride aboard the toy train to Darjeeling that Mother Teresa got the 'divine mandate' to serve the poor and 70 years on, that journey on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways is being recreated to mark her canonisation.
During her September 10, 1946, journey to Darjeeling in the toy train from the plains, Mother Teresa received what she termed the "call within the call", a divine mandate to leave the convent and serve the poor in the slums that eventually led to the setting of the Missionaries of Charity.
To mark Teresa's canonisation, members of the Darjeeling branch of the Lay Missionary of Charity are trying to relive Mother's 1946 journey.
"The ride in the toy train is symbolic. It is to feel and experience what #Mother might have felt on that ride while coming up to Darjeeling," said Father Peter Lingdam of the Lay Missionary of Charity.
Darjeeling was a landmark in Mother's life as she spent her initial years as nun in India at the Loreto Convent in the hill town. She also took her first vow as a nun there in 1931.
Besides a giant screen beaming Teresa's canonisation process live, special prayers are being organised in the churches of the hills.

1st B'desh vehicle through land border to arrive in New Delhi

The first Bangladeshi vehicle to have entered India through a land border as part of an accord for improved regulation of passenger and cargo traffic between the two countries will arrive in New Delhi on Monday.
Fitted with a Global Positioning System (GPS) to track its movement, the vehicle carrying commercial goods will reach Inland Container Depot (ICD), Patparganj.
"It is a historic moment as a vehicle from Bangladesh carrying imported consignment has been allowed to come into India without changing trucks," said Vinayak Azaad, Additional Commissioner at ICD, Patparganj.
The vehicle had entered the country late last month via Petrapole border in West Bengal, he said.
There was no provision to allow trucks registered in India to enter Bangladesh and vice versa until the accord was signed last year.
Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal Motor Vehicles Agreement, which was signed in June last year, allows vehicles to enter each other's territory and does away with trans-shipment of goods from one country's truck to another at the border, a time consuming and costly process.
"This will pave the way for more efficient passage of goods between India and Bangladesh saving a significant amount of time and resources of both the countries," Azaad told PTI.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the customs have played a significant role in ensuring hassle-free entry of the vehicle into India.
"We have coordinated with the Road Ministry and state police forces to ensure hassle-free movement of the vehicle to Delhi," the official said.

Woman stripped & thrashed by neighbours

A homemaker in Jalpaiguri district has alleged that she was dragged out of her home by the hair, stripped, tied up and beaten with rods for several hours by some neighbours who suspected she was having an illicit affair with a villager.
The woman's husband, a fish seller, said he did not believe her wife had an affair with anyone. This morning when the woman was released from a Dhupguri hospital and refused to return home, the husband said, he convinced her to go back.
"I told her she had done nothing wrong, so she should not feel fear or shame," he said.
The couple have two school-going sons.
The 38-year-old woman lodged a complaint today at Dhupguri police station naming Tapan Roy, his wife Sandhya, Swapan Roy, Jaleswar Roy, Naren Roy and his wife, Arati Roy, and Sanjoy Roy in her complaint.
All the seven have been accused of torture, molestation, attempt to murder and snatching. All are on the run.
The woman said in her police complaint the seven came to her home on Friday evening and "accused me of having an illicit relation with Swapan Roy and treated me inhumanly. I was resting as I was unwell. These men and their wives, who stay a few houses away, came into my room. My husband was away and they caught me by my hair and started beating me up. They were armed with lathis, iron rods and heavy iron utensils. They then began dragging and pushing me out of my house and took me to their home."
She said she was tied to a post in the verandah of a house. "They stripped me and began beating me up. The men molested and tortured me. I was rescued by some local people and taken to the block health centre," the woman wrote.
Kanak Roy, the Trinamul panchayat pradhan of the area, said he had heard of the incident.
"I have heard that a housewife was tortured by neighbours. I went to the place where the incident took place and spoke to both sides. The woman has filed a complaint and it is now up to the police to investigate the case," Roy said.
The husband of the victim said: "The accused are close to the panchayat pradhan and I am apprehensive the police will not take proper action."
Amitava Maity, the Jalpaiguri police superintendent, said an investigation had been started based on the woman's complaint. "A woman has lodged a complaint accusing neighbours of torture and molestation. The police station concerned is investigating the case," he said.
Sources in the district police said the woman had been released from the block health centre after first-aid yesterday. "The police station has no medical records as yet and the victim would be taken to Jalpaiguri district hospital for a full medical check-up," a source said.
