"Green Tribunal Ruling Cause for My Brother's Suicide" - Alleges Family Member

A labourer was found hanging from a tree at a village near Mainaguri this morning and his family alleged that he had committed suicide as he had become jobless because of the ban on river mining.

Police sources said villagers had spotted Ranjan Roy's body hanging from a tree near his house at Jalpesh, around 25km from here. The brother of the deceased, Nani Roy, said Ranjan, 21, had killed himself as he had found it difficult to repay the loan following the ban on the sand mining.

"Ranjan used to collect sand from the Jalpesh river for contractors who had bagged the right to mine riverbeds against the payment of a fee. But after a ban was imposed on the mining in March, he was struggling to run his family. Recently, he had also borrowed money from some people and could not find any way to repay the loan," said Nani.

"He was suffering from depression and took the drastic step last night," he added.

Shyam Prasad, the convener of the joint forum of stakeholders who are involved in the mining, echoed Nani.

"As per the order of the National Green Tribunal, the state irrigation department had banned mining on riverbeds. Over one lakh people are involved in this sector across north Bengal and all of them have been jobless for the past three-four months."

Amitabha Maiti, the superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri, said: "We have registered a case of unnatural death. The body has been sent for post-mortem. A probe is on."

Piercing eyes trying to convey thousand a emotions, young but thoughtful, confused yet having a missionary zeal towards achieving their goal of Gorkhaland. This is what I felt, while having a conversation with some young guns over a cup of tea. They told me they are going on a relay fasting programme as part of their grassroot level socio-political activism.

I asked them gently - Bhai " Will it make any difference". One of them smiled and said "Da! At least we can say we tried and contributed! made a difference or not we cant say, but we tried", Da! What did you do? What have you contributed?"

Well!! that summed up the entire conversation, in our heart we all are students, learning lessons everyday from someone or the other.

These guys were like a breath of fresh air, having no greed of the "Chair Politics" nor of the "Petty Contracts", just wanting their voices to be heard not only by the Centre, State, but also by our very own political leaders and intellectuals, across party lines.

These guys had political affiliation, yet were so apolitical in their thoughts, wanting everyone to join them, guide them, not only by our "Aguas" but also by our "Bato Haguas" and intellectuals.

People might not throng to the place where they are fasting. We only flock to meetings where our entire budget is provided, right from our travel, food to alikati halka "Kada Khane" pocket money. Cutting across our party lines, thoughts, affiliations, intellectual capacity, why not pay a visit to the fasting site or just join them, our visit might boost their morale?

If they can honestly start a non-violent movement, peacefully without any bandhs or strikes, why not support them?

Yes! there will be criticism too and they will have to face it. They might or might not achieve their goals but can hold their heads high saying, "at least we made an effort."

Not everyone will appreciate what they are doing or agree with what I am writing, but with pride we can all say "At least we Tried! What did you do?

हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीको पदयात्रा, आग्सु र हामी -विष्णु सुनार –विष्णु सुनार

अहिले हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीको ऐतिहासिक पदयत्राबारे चर्चा सर्वव्याप्त छ। गोर्खा अटोनोमास काउन्सिल डिमण्ड कमिटीका सभापति हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीको सार्वजनिक जीवन आग्सुबाटै थालिएको हो। उनी तीनवटा कालसम्म आग्सुको केन्द्रीय सभापति थिए। उनले आग्सुको केन्द्रीय दायित्व ग्रहण गर्दा यो संस्थाको सांगठनिक अवस्था आजको जस्तो थिएन। उनको नेतृत्वमा गोपाल आचार्य, दिलु शर्मा, भाष्कर दाहाल, दिलबहादुर लिम्बू, पदुम बराइलीहरूले कति परिश्रम गरे, त्यसको हिसाव छैन।  
१९९७-मा म जुनकिरी पत्रिकाको सम्पादक हुँदा प्राय गुवाहाटी जान्थ्ये। छेत्री मास्टर प्लान बनाउन खप्पिस थिए। गोर्खा ठाकुरबारी(पल्टन बजार)मा हामी बसेर परियोजनाहरू बनाउने गर्थ्यौँ। सेमिनर, कर्मशाला, भेटघाट, शहीद र स्वाधीनता सेनानीहरूको जयन्ती पालन आदि कार्यक्रम गरेर आम गोर्खालीलाई सचेत बनाउने योजना बनाइन्थ्यो। दार्जिलिङबाट रोशन गिरी प्रायः आउँथिए र हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीसँग नेपाली/गोर्खाली, जातिको नाउँ अबलिके आदि कुरामाथि चर्चा गर्थे। यसपछि आग्सुले धेरै शोध, विचार-विमर्श गरी जाति नाउँ गोर्खा ग्रहण गर्छ। आग्सुको एउटा सानो लबीले तालिबानी तरिकाले कुरा भनेकोहुँदा मैले २००८-को मध्य भागसम्म यो कुरालाई सहज रूपले लिन सकिन। तर, आग्सुको कुनै पनि आह्वान परियोजना र जाति नाउँको विरोध पनि गरिन। २००८-बाट रोहित गौतमको नेतृत्वमा पूर्ण छेत्री र मैले सपरिवारमा आग्सु र जाति नाउँबारे एउटा अभियान थालेको कुरा सबैलाई थाह छ।

नयाँ शताब्दीमा आग्सुले गोर्खा शब्द ग्रहण गरेपछिको इतिहास सबैलाई थाह छ। हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीको नेतृत्वमा अटोनोमस काउन्सिल डिमाण्ड कमिटीको गठन भएपछि हाम्रा बुद्धिजीविहरूको सातो गयो। असमको मुख्य धाराको कुनै पनि संस्थाले आग्सुको विरोध अर्थात् जीएसीडीसीको विरोध गरेनन्। आग्सुले यस्तो आँट गर्नुकोपछि एउटै मात्र कारण छ। त्यो हो आग्सुले गोर्खा जातिलाई असमको भूमिपुत्र मान्छ। यस कुरा गत (१) विश्वनाथ चाराली (२) डिगबोई-को जनभेलाले स्पष्ट गरेको छ। आज आसु, ताई आहोम, बोरो, कार्बी, मिसिङ, लगायत छब्बिसवटा संगठनले आग्सुलाई आफ्नो मित्र मान्नुको पछि के कारण छ?

   आग्सु र जीएसीडीसी एउटै मोहोरका दुइ पाटा हुन्। असमको गोर्खाली जनजीवनमा आग्सुका प्रेम तामाङ्ग र जीएसीडीसीका हर्कबहादुर छेत्री दुई जातीय नेता र सपुतका रूपमा स्थापित छन्। दुवैले एक अर्कालाई विश्वासमा लिएर  सल्लाह गरेर दायित्व बाँडेर जातिको हक र अधिकारको संग्राम गर्दै छन्। दुवैले सुपरिकल्पित रूपले आ-आफ्नो दायित्व पालन गर्दै छन्, यसमा कुनै सन्देह छैन।  

असमको उत्तरपारको एकदमै पूर्व, जोनाईबाट हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीले असमको इतिहासमा कहिल्यै नभएको पदयात्राको पदक्षेपले असम, उत्तर पूर्व, भारत सरकारसम्मलाई गहिरोसँग विचार गर्न बाध्य गराएको छ। छेत्रीको उमेर र एकला चलो रे नीतिले  प्रत्येक गोर्खालीको छाति भत्भती पोलेको छ। हाम्रो योजना नै यस्तो थियो। आज छेत्रीले यो उमेरमा यस्तो आँट गर्न सक्छन् भने जातिको नाउँमा भाषण छाँट्ने टोपी गाम्छा थाप्नेहरूको अन्तरात्माले उनीहरूलाई धिक्कारेको छ। गुवाहाटीको अतिथि होटेलको एसी कोठामा बसेर मुख्यमन्त्रीलाई दिने स्मारक-पत्र र दस्तावेज लेख्ने र बुद्धिजीवी भनी स्वघोषित हुनेहरू के राजपथमा हर्कबहादुर छेत्री जस्तै हिँड्न सक्छन्? असमको मुख्यधाराका स्वनाउँ धन्य मानिसहरूको गिदी छेत्रीले बिगारेका छन्। यो छेत्री को हो, भन्ने प्रश्नले सबैको मन पोलेको छ। छेत्री कुन संग्रामी संस्थाबाट आएर कुन संस्थाका सभापति भए र त्यो संस्थाको मुख्य माँगको आधारभूमि बनाउने क्रममा उनले यो पदयात्रा गरेका हुन् भन्ने कुरा सबैले छर्लङ्गै बुझे। कुनै भूमिपुत्रले यो काम गर्न सक्छ भन्ने कुरा स्थापित भयो।

   पदयात्रा र आग्सुमाथि चर्चा गरिसकेपछि हामीमाथि पनि केही चर्चा अघिसारौँ। सोशियल मीडीया राम्रो माध्यम हो। आजभोलि फेसबुक, टुइटर आदिको समय छ। जति यसको उपयोग भएको छ उत्ति नै दुरुपयोग पनि भएको छ। कुराको गहिरोमा नगई फ्याट्टै काँचो कमेन्ट गर्न जति सजिलो छ, त्यति राजमार्गमा आएर गर्न छैन। हर्कबहादुर छेत्रीले गरेको पदयात्राले जातिलाई एक पैसाको हानि भएको छैन। बरू सय प्रतिशत लाभ भयो। तर, आग्सुले केही गरेको छैन अथवा आग्सुका नेताहरू मौन छन् भनेर फेसबुकमा कमेन्ट गर्दा जातिलाई अलिकति भए पनि हानि हुन्छ। सबैले आफ्नो स्तरमा काम गर्दै छन्। जथाभावी लेखेर जातिप्रेमी कर्मीको मन दुखाएर कुनै लाभ हुँदैन। मनमा आगो दन्किएको छ भने त्यसको रापले असक्षमलाई न्यानो रूपले सेकेको बेस। त्यसलाई पोलेर आच्छु आच्छु बनाएर जाति प्रेमीहरूको हियो खसाले लाभ हुँदैन।

कुनै दुष्ट पक्षले हामीलाई कर्के आँखाले हेरिरहेको समयमा नैतिक दायित्वको सीमा नाघेर उनको षडयन्त्र सफल नबनाउँ। कुचोले गर्ने काम बतासले गरे जस्तै हुन्छ।

No new Dengue related deaths across Bengal

No Dengue related deaths were reported from any districts of West Bengal in the last 24 hours and the toll stood at 23.

The health department has been "validating" reports of new Dengue cases and no figure on the number of people infected by the vector-borne disease was issued, West Bengal Director of Health Services Biswaranjan Satpathy said.

Till August 25, 5,639 people were infected by Dengue in West Bengal since January, Satpathy had said.

Most of the Dengue cases have been reported from districts like Howrah, Hooghly's Sreerampore municipal area, North 24 Parganas' South Dum Dum and South 24 Parganas, while a few isolated cases were reported from Darjeeling, Coochbehar and North Dinajpur districts.
